Online gaming is one of those realities in the virtual world that’s often debated. It’s a common pastime. That fact has been accepted but there are continuous debates about the harm it can cause. In fact, there have been many instances reported regarding the ill effects of online gaming. Firstly online gaming is so progressive in terms of gaming that gamers are often too interested in playing whenever they have a chance. This constant need to play can turn into dependency for many. Such a reality has adverse effects on the minds of youngsters because they can’t relate between reality and the online world, and can fail to make a difference. They get happy about online friends and opponents, and achievements there that their self worth is distorted. They feel more proud of their achievements when winning online games rather than participating at a sports event.
Many youngsters sacrifice playtime in order to engage in online gaming. After school, instead of meeting up with friends to run and play around, they prefer getting online and playing. This reduces any scope for exercise and physical activity which is a very important need for children.
People are hell bent on buying new games, and upgrades which does cost money. They are known ask their parents, and if for some reason a game is not bought when they want it, they’re angry. This anger cause depression and they could be willing to use fraudulent means to buy the game on their own while at the same time expressing resentment for their parents. There have been instances when kids have swiped their parents’ credit cards and gone on a shopping spree online in the name on online gaming because there are many peripherals and games to be bought.
Online gaming also cause some players to be addicted to the game wherein they lose motivation towards all else, and stick only to gaming. This makes them introverts and they lose their since of social being. Such a scenario can be very hurtful for a family because the rehabilitation period can be a very trying time.
Online gaming also increases the risk of fraud and identity theft. When playing online, one needs to log in and may have to divulge some personal details on the game site. When chatting with other players, they may disclose more than they intend to. There are times when they download upgrades and themes related to the game. These may be sent from unauthorized sources and as such the download brings along spyware which is targeted at identity theft.
Under supervision, online gaming can be a great platform that allows kids to interact, and compete in a healthy manner. There are many gaming portals that are information based and such games are education based, allowing kids to learn a lot. It’s important the youngsters are taught to play responsibly, and young adults don’t use online gaming as a means of escapism. With a little help, the introduction of online gaming in one’s life can be a great pastime that brings great joy.
